2011 Spirit of Free Beer
Competition Rules
  • On-line registration is required. Registration opens on April 1 and closes on May 6.

  • There is no limit on the number of entries. More than one entry may be made per sub-category, however they must be from different fermentations or of different ingredients. Identify the different entries on the entry form and bottle labels (for example, IPA#1, IPA#2, etc.).

  • Each entry shall consist of (3) three 10-12 oz. bottles. All beers will be transported in standard 4x6-pack case boxes. Irregular shaped bottles require special handling and increase the risk of accidental mishandling. Bottles may be brown or green glass and must be free of any labels. In addition, these should not have raised glass designs, etched logos, or any other identifying marks. Bottle caps must be either plain or blacked out with a magic marker. Attach the bottle label to each bottle with a rubber band.

  • All entries must be brewed at home. No commercial operation or equipment may be used. All entries become the property of Brewers United for Real Potables.

  • It is the entrant’s responsibility to enter his or her beer in the proper category, as specified in the 2008 BJCP “Style Guidelines.” No entry will be reclassified. For additional details refer to the guidelines at the BJCP website: http://www.bjcp.org

  • Entries in some categories/sub-categories need to specify special ingredients and/or classic style information on the entry form and bottle labels. See the 2008 BJCP guidelines for more info.

  • All MEAD entries (categories 24, 25, 26) must include sweetness, carbonation, and strength information. All CIDER entries (categories 27, 28) must include sweetness, and carbonation information on the entry form and bottle labels.

  • The entry fee is ($6.00) six dollars for the first entry. Each additional entry is ($5.00) dollars. Payment can be made using PayPal, cash or check. Make checks payable to: BURP. When dropping off or sending bottles, please attach a check for your overall entry fee or a PayPal receipt.

  • Registration deadline is Friday, May 6. Mail and homebrew shop dropoffs must be received by close of business on May 6. Entries may also be dropped off at the BURP monthly meeting on May 7.

  • Judging will be done in a closed session on May 14.

  • Medals and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each category plus 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Best Of Show round.

  • The Bill Moe Award will be given to the entrant with the highest scoring extract beer.

  • Winners will be announced online by midnight on May 14.

  • Scoresheets will be mailed on May 16. Medals and prizes will be distributed on June 11.
