Spirit of Free Beer (SoFB), held annually since 1992, is the Washington DC metropolitan (DC/MD/VA) area's largest amateur homebrew competition. SoFB is BJCP and AHA sanctioned event and entries are accepted from all BJCP styles. Each beer is judged by Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) qualified judges, who provide quality feedback in the form of written evaluations with suggestions for improvement.  Winners are awarded ribbons or medals as well as great prizes such as brewing ingredients/supplies/equipment, apparel from well-known breweries, and gift certificates from local merchants. In 2010, the total prize booty donated by our generous SoFB sponsors, all of which was awarded to the SOFB XVIII competition winners, was over $3,700.00 in estimated retail value. SoFB also is a qualifying event for the Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB) competition.
